Today may be the last day of this adventure together but it ain't over yet! We didn't hike today but we made the best of the 8-10 waking hours we had together. Tammy's son, Daryn, and two of his buddies flew over from their military training base to spend the day with us. After stopping at the post office to ship some of our extra items home, for me it was those d--n Mahjong tiles, we headed to the little municipality airport to meet Daryn and his buddies. After that we went to a great little farmers market in Harrisonburg and then to lunch. After lunch we went to a lavender farm in the area. They had chickens, pigs, goats, horses, Lamas, and beautiful gardens.

After all that adventure it was time for Daryn and his friends to head back and it was so close to our cocktail hour we had to say goodbye. Tonight is the night of Supermoon, so we sat with our wine and watched the most beautiful moon rise in the sky. Then we played a fun game of SpotIt.

Tammy, Melissa, Joanne, and Sue have to get up at 3am to catch their planes out of Charlottesville so we wrapped up our trip by recording our goodbyes and final memories of the trip.

After searching the internet for a good trail we took off in the car Tammy rented and headed for that last hurrah. The road that took us to the trail head got narrower and bumpier the further we went. We were deep in the woods of Virginia and as we rounded the next corner we came across an old trailer which was obviously inhabited by someone who did not want to be around society.

The remoteness of the area was starting to freak us out a little but we kept going since it was our last hike. Further up the road we came across a huge pile of garbage along the side of the road.

This is not the same type of trails we experienced in Vermont but still we proceeded. Then we got to the trailhead and again came across a pile of garbage marking the spot. It was a unanimous decision, this was not the trail for us. Not wanting to give up we decided to make the hour long drive to Shenandoah National Park and try to find another trail head. After driving for what seemed like forever, we decided we were too hungry and had to go to the bathroom so changed our plans in favor of wine tasting and lunch. Our Inn keeper told us this morning about the Trump Winery in the area and being the good conservatives we are, the decision was made to support Trump and taste his wine.

We tasted the wine which lead to purchasing the wine and having lunch. Both were a very enjoyable experience since they took the place of our last hike on the Appalachian trail.

When we returned to our Inn we broke out the Mahjong tiles and everyone learned the game on tiles that no-one could read.

Akwalkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17010444834525169548noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4790377515404901998.post-40425957843838460532016-10-13T17:55:00.000-07:002016-10-13T17:55:13.182-07:00These F-----g Mahjong Tiles!Getting a bargain is not all that it is cracked up to be. I thought half price was a good deal on Mahjong tiles as they seem to be so popular but they are heavy and I have had to carry them all over the country. Not only that, but they seem to bother the TSA people and every time I have to get searched because of those damn tiles. Plus, we have not even had time to play the game, we are so busy hiking and eating.
We spent most of the day traveling by plane and car to get to Virginia, we are in a beautiful place called "By The Side of The Road Inn" in Harrisonburg, VA. We arrived here just in time to have wine and appetizers then go out to dinner at a Pizza place.
Tomorrow we have found a section of the Appalachian Trail in the Shenandoah National Park so will head out in the morning for our last hike on the Appalachian Trail.
We arrived in Boston around 1pm but our condo with Stay Alfred was not ready til 3pm so we got some lunch and killed some time until we were allowed into our condo. Then we walked to Little Italy which was not too far from our place. We found a comedy theater, bought tickets for the show that night, had dinner in a wonderful Italian restaurant. We ordered several appetizers and shared as none of us felt very hungry. The comedy show was at Improv Asylum and was a fun way to spend the evening.
Today we headed to the harbor to get tickets to ride the City Trolly and take a harbor tour.
A movie was later made starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. It portrays the struggles of two 60 something men not in the best shape while walking the trail.
I wondered if it would also portray our struggles as a group of 60 something women, and our one youngster who is in her 50's. But I was very wrong, we have enjoyed every step on the Appalachian trail and completed this portion with no trouble at all.
We knew we wanted to visit the Vermont Country Store, famous for a huge variety of goods. The weather today was cold, windy with a possibility of rain so we decided it was a shopping and laundry day.
Our Inn owners, Edie and Chuck told us about the Rockefeller Mansion in Woodstock and the Billings Farm, so off we went.
Lawrence Rockefeller became the third owner of the Mansion after marrying Mary Billings, whose father, Frederick Billings was the second owner. The mansion is spectacular and has lots of interesting history. It was dedicated as a registered national historic landmark in 1967 by Lady Bird Johnson.
Across the street is the Billings Farm where lots of activities were going on for everyone in the family.
It was fun to see all the activities but we had to move on to the Vermont Country Store. We had about a 45 minute drive to get there and could not believe our eyes when we finally arrived. There were hundreds of people crowded in the store. It was an assault on our senses. I think it is because of the Columbus Day weekend but it was overwhelming. We looked around and left, I think a few purchases were made but not many.

For most of this hike that has been the case but the hike today crossed several roads, went by a campground, and even some houses. There were lots of families on the trail just taking short walks, groups of Asians asking directions to the trail head as they were parked right beside it, and even some East Indian families obviously excited to be in the woods.
This area of Vermont is a ski area in the winter and at this time of year is heavy with "peepers" coming to see all the beautiful fall colors. If you ever come to Vermont we all would highly recommend coming to the October Inn and staying with Edie and Chuck, they are wonderful and the area has a lot of different things to do.

We have been blessed with the most beautiful weather, colors, and good hikes. We have stayed in the cutest and most beautiful Inn's I have ever seen. We left Blueberry Inn, which was gorgeous and moved into Lilac Inn which was like a unbelievable French residence. Melissa and I had a room that was huge and felt like a personal home.
We couldn't resist doing a little shopping at the Brandon street market then we headed out for the October Inn. After driving for about an hour we arrived, and what should happen to be located within walking distance to the Inn was none other than the Long Trail Brewery. We checked in, put our bags in our rooms and headed for the brewery. We all ordered a beer, Melissa a red wine, with some nachos and truffle fries. Melissa found out, you don't order wine in a brewery because beer is their focus not wine. As we are sitting on the deck enjoying the beautiful weather and beer the waitress comes and tells us we have to evacuate as there is a gas leak next door!! "there is no time to finish the beer, she says, and you cannot take it with you, but don't worry about tipping me" We did have time to pay the bill, however.

So we loaded up in the car and headed down the road to Woodstock, not the one from the 60's. It is the cutest little town with lots of great shops but oh so expensive!

We are two nights at the October Inn and are headed out to a point to point hike on the Appalachian trail tomorrow.

Today was our day. While driving down the road someone noticed a sign indicating "Spirit in Nature". Sounded interesting to all of us so we pulled in the parking lot. It also had a labyrinth and Sue was familiar with them so she explained that as we walked through we were to think of a problem and when we came to the middle we were to put a leave or stick or flower in the center to represent our ridding ourselves of the problem. We all live such fortunate lives we could not think of any problems so we just privately meditated as we walked through the labyrinth
The Spirit in Nature is situated on 70 acres of land on the western slope of the Green Mountains. The paths wander along river banks and the shores of beaver ponds, over mossy stone walls and through old growth forest. We followed different paths through the woods and came across poems and quotations from different religions, all being very thought provocating. In 1990 Middleburg College held a symposium here on "Spirit and Nature", it was attended by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Today's hike took us on a re-creation of the Chilkoot trail. We were given our first warning of bear in the area. We came across a woman camping on her own, she told us she has seen bear, so yes, they are in the area. We knew with all our talking and laughing a bear would probably not come near us. It was a great hike full of beautiful views of a lake with lots of boulders and tree roots to traverse.

Today it was necessary to be transported to the trail head so being the independent Alaskan women that we are we decided to rent a van and transport ourselves and give ourselves the freedom to go and do what we want.
So we had directions from the inn keeper, we had our gps, and we were off to find the trail. We were told it was about 20 minutes away but we drove and drove and drove taking in all the beautiful scenery. Well we ended up in New York!! Joanne enjoyed the visit having never been there before and will be sure to go back sometime but that is not where the trail is located. Time to regroup!
Next we only got lost twice and had to ask directions, one guy actually drove by our stopped car and just sensed we were lost so backed up and came to our rescue.
Finally we were there, we hiked to the top of a mountain and were rewarded with the most beautiful view of the Champlain Lake and valley below.
Our next stop was the Douglas Orchards. We were given an off the cuff tour of the process of producing some of the best cider in the country. A couple of times a week, pickers bring in bushels of apples and dump them on the washing belt, they are then ground up whole, mashed and the cider is extracted, the cider is then sterilized with ultra violet lighting and bottled for sale in the store. The mashing process was difficult for me to follow but cloths used in that process are washed in these old wringer washing machines.
All of the hard ciders are crafted with Vermont grown apples. The owner gave us a tasting of several different hard ciders, my favorite was the Cranberry hard cider so I am now carrying a bottle all the way home to have with Thanksgiving dinner.
After returning to our Inn for the evening, I went and took a steam bath, Melissa made some phone calls, Sue and Bonnie walked into town to check it out and Tammy and Joanne relaxed in their room. Before dinner we gathered in the bar for a drink and learned from Gina on social media that Southern California was in danger of a big earthquake. We discussed that for a few minutes as a couple of us have homes there, then went into dinner. Not much we can do from here and it is way too beautiful here to think about anything bad other places. Dinner, of course, was wonderful. Melissa discovered they sold Brunello wine, and bought a bottle to share. Our last hike together was in France and Italy, where we visited many wineries. One of the most favored wines on that trip was Brunello Di Montalcino, made in Montalcino where we hiked.
The day and evening were perfect, Tammy's suitcase was in her room after dinner and we are anxious to experience tomorrow.

Sue and I went to the Logan airport this morning around 11:30 and met Bonnie (she flew in from Savannah, GA) in front of the Cape Air desk. Joanne, Melissa and Tammy met us a few hours later at the Cape Air gate area.
It was so good to see everyone and it wasn't long before we were laughing and making fun of each other.
A conversation between Sue and Melissa: Sue-last hike I developed a very large blister on the back of my foot. Melissa-did you put some muleskin on it? Sue-you mean moleskin? Joanne and I have decided we are going to make a list of what we are now calling Melissaisms.
We flew in a 9 passenger plane so it was almost like having a private charter.
After an hour of flight time we arrived in Rutland, Vermont where there was a driver waiting to take us on to Shoreham for our first night stay in Vermont. Unfortunately, Tammy's bag did not make it on the flight as there was not enough room so our driver was kind enough to stop at a store in Rutland so Tammy could get a toothbrush and some contact solution.
It turned out to be a great opportunity to get some wine and Vermont cheese for our stay at the Inn.
We had dinner here at the Shoreham Inn and are now ready to start hiking tomorrow.

We started our day with a walk through the neighborhoods of Boston headed to the Freedom Trail, a brick marked path that takes you by all the historic places in Boston. We ended up at the USS Constitution which is in dry dock getting needed repairs. From there we caught the City View Hop On Hop Off bus and had a very entertaining driver with a wonderful Boston accent and sarcastic sense of humor. We rode with him until he kicked us all of his bus at stop #1 The Long Wharf.
We found a wonderful restaurant, Granary Tavern, just across the street. Sue had a craft beer, soup, and the most wonderful Bang Bang Cauliflower, a fried cauliflower with sweet and spicy chili sauce. I had seafood chowder and calamari with chorizo which was also very good.
Then the excitement of the afternoon began!

We got back on the tour bus with the intention of getting off at Chinatown to look around and for me to look for a set of Mahjong tiles. We had to walk some to go from the bus stop to actually get to Chinatown. I managed to get us lost twice while using the maps on the iPhone. I think it will be a while before Sue lets me be the leader. We did eventually find Chinatown, we could tell by the ducks and chickens hanging in the window and all the Chinese writing on the buildings. I went into the first gift shop I saw, again Sue was reluctant to follow me into as we had to go down a creepy spiral staircase to get there. Low and behold he had a set of tiles for $25, half price from Amazon or any other place I looked. After the purchase I found out why they are so cheap, all the tiles are chinese symbols, no english anywhere.
Next we decided to treat ourselves and have an ice cream puff, a wonderful sugary dessert. We left there and decided we would start to walk home and try and beat the rain. We stopped in a wine shop to take some wine home to our hosts. When we went to pay, Sue discovered her wallet was missing!!! OMG, had she been pick pocketed? All her credit cards, drivers license and money were in her wallet. We took some time to breathe, Sue remembered the name of the ice cream shop we had just been at, called them, and yes they had her wallet, she had left it on the counter when we sat down to eat. We high tailed it back and was so relieved to get all her credit cards, drivers license and money in her hands again.
By this time it was raining full bore so we got an uber car to take us home

Sue and I arrived in Boston this morning at 7am after flying all night from Fairbanks and Seattle. Even though we were lucky enough to fly first class it still did not provide a restful sleep. We are staying in an AirBnB in Charlestown. Roger, a very nice man who owns the townhouse, rents out an extra bedroom and says the money he makes doing that will be applied to his trip to Europe and AirBnB's he will rent over there. AirBnB's are a great way to go, you meet local people who can be very helpful in your travels and the parties on both sides are vetted very well so it seems very safe to do.
After a pretty sleepless night Sue and I took off walking to find a place for breakfast and to find Fenway Park baseball field. We found a great little place close by, The Grasshopper Cafe, for breakfast but it took us seven miles of walking to find Fenway Park. We got there 5 minutes before the 2pm park tour started so of course we did that. The tour lasted for an hour and took us to all the different seating possibilities in the park, we also went into the glass enclosed press area. The park is 102 years old and was saved from destruction by three gentlemen who bought the park and got it designated an historical park saving it from any future destruction as well.
We Ubered back to the AirBnB and then walked to a little restaurant called Prescott which is also close by.
We are back in our room now fighting to stay awake at least til 7:30pm

This time we are staying in the USA and hiking parts of the Appalachian trail. We chose Vermont after Tammy talked to a very helpful travel guide from the area who told her of the beautiful fall colors and great B&B's we would experience.

We have two new hikers this time, Sue and Bonnie. Sue and I have hiked in Australia and France in the past and have had great times together so I am really looking forward to hiking with her again.

Sue and I will leave Fairbanks on Sept. 28th flying to Boston and staying in an AirBnB. The others arrive on Sept. 30th, the next day we fly to Rutland and start hiking.
